water closet and waste management enthusiast
R. Elena Lie Lokman studies Political Science, Innovation and Entrepreneurship at Duke University. She has always been interested in challenging inefficient systems and proposing solutions that incorporate technology, design and social impact.
Elena has authored and illustrated an interactive book, which features her exposé on the pig slaughterhouse industry. She also recently produced a documentary that brings forward the ineffectiveness of the waste management in emerging markets. She co-founded her first non-profit nine years ago and has been pioneering several social enterprises since. For a while now, she has been a toilet advocate, having designed her own toilets and having worked with the World Toilet Organization and a Gates Reinvent The Toilet project.
She loves backpacking, playing poker and experimenting in the kitchen during her spare time. She has been living abroad since she was fifteen, but she will return to Indonesia pursuing her startup full-time following her graduation in December 2018.
